Geography Week in Year 4

This week, Year 4 immersed themselves in the wonders of Geography Week with a fascinating focus on the country of Iceland. Known for its dramatic landscape of volcanoes and glaciers, Iceland offered us the perfect opportunity to explore how natural features shape the Earth.

We began by learning all about Iceland’s unique geography. The children were fascinated by the idea that volcanoes and glaciers could exist side by side! We looked at dramatic images and videos of erupting volcanoes, bubbling hot springs, icy glaciers, and lava fields. This led to some brilliant class discussions around how these features are formed and how they affect the people and animals that live nearby.

As part of our learning, we also took part in a local fieldwork activity—an important part of geography where we explore our surroundings like real geographers. We went on a walk around the local area to search for water features, such as drains, pipes, guttering, puddles, and water butts.

Armed with tally sheets and keen eyes, the children investigated how water is managed in our everyday environment and discussed why these features are important for keeping our homes and streets safe and dry.

The children loved spotting and counting the different water features and were surprised by how many there were once they started looking! It was a brilliant way to link our understanding of water and weather to our own lives and surroundings.
